Launching Applications And Unsafe Files

0904

I created a vbs file and tried to run it and got the silly warning a bit like

I see there are a few solutions to it. One is mentioned here

Launching programs and unsafe files: This policy setting controls whether or not the 'Open File - Security Warning' prompt is shown when launching executables or other unsafe files. Oct 28, 2015  Go back to the Internet Explorer and toggle the 'Launching Applications and Unsafe Files' back to 'Enable'. Leaving it 'disable might cause a security risk. Since the NAS and your computer are two different operating systems, I suggest that you post your query in the TechNet forum as it would be better suited for the issue. Launching applications and unsafe files must be set to enable - even though you get multiple panels popping up telling you not to do that. I enabled it - downloaded the file and disabled it again. Read this answer in context 2.

In IE- tools..internet options..security tab..custom level..'Launching applications and unsafe files' Enabled (as opposed to prompt).

and start...run..gpedit.msc administrative templates..windows components..internet explorer..'Turn off the security settings check feature) Enabled that.

I would like to know how insecure that option is. Is it totally safe? (By that I mean, is it going to cause IE to do something stupid like download a file automatically without asking me? or run something without asking me - something I didn't double click on).

i.e. is it something that me or pretty much any reasonably technical person would be well advised to do?

Internet Security Settings Prevented Opening

I don't want IE to automatically download something without a prompt(which IE maybe used to do like pre Win XP Sp2!) If I double click an executable file or script, I don't want a warning by virtue of it being an executable or script. (I know it is and I double clicked it to run it, and i'm aware of the nature of these things). I just don't want IE doing something stupid and insecure. But I don't want IE or Windows trying to be clever and being a nuisance.

I notice there are other ways too like this involving the registry here and i'd be interested to know how they compare from a security standpoint. (no doubt the least intrusive is using sysinternals streams on the file or folder of files but i'm interested in the security of the method I mentioned compared to the one involving the registry.

I use IE 11 on Windows 10.

I made the changes you suggested in IE for the Internet Zone and the application starts without the dialog coming up. However, it hangs while initializing. This is the same thing that happens on a local copy if the user has not be granted full permissions on all the files associated with this app. Also, IE now puts up a warning message every time a web page is opened. The NAS is UNIX based so you cannot set the permissions. The NAS is on the same network as my workstation so it should be 'Intranet'. The Intranet zone setting for launching unknown application as already set to enable.

I am going to just use a local copy of the application.
