Graduate Scholarships. While less common than undergraduate scholarships, scholarships for graduate students are available. Graduate students rely heavily on fellowships or assistantships - especially in high-need areas like nursing or teaching - but these aren’t available to everyone and don’t always cover a graduate student’s living expenses. The scholarships are separated into subjects such as Arts, Classics, or STEM (among others), and include links to further information about applying to each one. Though they differ in things like general requirements, each of the following master's degree scholarships have some things in common:

1. Lydia Donaldson Tutt-Jones Memorial Research Grant — $5,000

The Lydia Donaldson Tutt-Jones Memorial Research Grant is awarded to graduate students interested in conducting research identifying attitudinal and behavioral contributors to African-American academic success. Successful applicants will be U.S. citizens attending a university or four-year college, and will present a research proposal that makes it clear their research focus is on high academic achievers. The application deadline is June 15.

2. Cornaro Scholarship — $5,000

The Cornaro Scholarship is a competitive award offered to honors graduates associated with the Kappa Gamma Pi sorority (affiliated with over 100 colleges and universities in the United States). The scholarship is based on a number of criteria, but successful applicants will effectively demonstrate how her life reflects the Kappa Gamma Pi motto of 'Faith and Service.' Other considerations include the applicant's values, volunteer work, leadership experience, high academic standards, and solid career aspirations. An online application and a letter of acceptance to an accredited graduate program are required. The application deadline varies year by year, so check the website for further details.

3. NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Program — $7,500

NCAA student athletes interested in attending a Master's program can be nominated for the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Program during the academic year in which they complete their final season of eligibility for intercollegiate athletics. Students should have excelled both academically and athletically during their undergraduate career, and must intend to continue their academic work at an accredited graduate or professional school. The application deadline is continuous, and prospective students should check the website for further details.

4. National Women's Studies Association Graduate Scholarship — $1,000

The National Women's Studies Association (NWSA) awards an annual scholarship of $1,000 to a female student involved in the research or writing stages of a Master's thesis in the interdisciplinary field of women's studies. The proposed research project must be about women and should support the NWSA's mission statement. Scholarship applicants are encouraged to educate themselves on and join the NWSA before applying. The annual application deadline is May 15.

5. American-Scandinavian Study in Scandinavia Fellowship — Varies

The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers fellowships up to $23,000, and grants up to $5,000, to students pursuing research, degrees, or arts projects in Scandinavia. The awards, the number of which vary from year to year, will support students in the Scandinavian countries of their choice for up to one year. Successful applicants will have completed their undergraduate education by the start of their program, and will have well-defined projects that make a stay in Scandinavia essential. The annual application deadline is November 1.

6. Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture Community Service Scholarship

This scholarship assists students intending to pursue careers in the rabbinate, Jewish education, or social work. The scholarship, which varies in amount, will support the student's training at a recognized yeshiva, teacher training seminary, school of social work, or university. Though scholars can come from any country, priority will be given to those planning to serve in places other than the United States, Canada, or Israel. The annual application deadline is November 30.

7. Citizens Bank TruFit Good Citizen Scholarship — Varies

Each year, Citizens Bank awards scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $10,000 to deserving undergraduate and graduate students who have been accepted into an accredited university. Unlike most other scholarships, the TruFit Good Citizen scholarship is specifically designed to reward those who are focused on giving back to their communities through volunteer programs. To apply for the scholarship, one must complete the online application along with an essay or video. The application deadline is April 30.

8. British Chevening Scholarships for International Students — Varies

Funded by Britain's Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the British Chevening Scholarships are awarded to students from around the world to study postgraduate (usually Master's) courses at a university in the United Kingdom. Chevening Scholarships are specifically aimed at those who have been identified as leaders in fields such as politics, business, the media, civil society, religion, and academia. Around 1,500 Chevening scholarships are awarded annually, each of which covers tuition, a living allowance, and airfare to and from the UK. The annual application deadline is November 15.

9. Endeavour Postgraduate Scholarships in Australia for International Students — Varies

The Endeavour Postgraduate Awards provide full financial support for international students to study or conduct research in Australia in pursuit of either a Masters (up to two years) or a PhD (up to four years) degree. The scholarships include travel and tuition allowances, health and travel insurance, and a monthly stipend. Successful applicants will have already been accepted to an Australian university. The annual application deadline is June 30.

10. Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program — Varies

The French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs initiated the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program to attract overseas talent to Masters courses at French universities. Though the scholarship itself does not cover tuition fees in France, award recipients do receive a monthly allowance of 1,200 euro, airfare to and from France, health insurance, some accommodation allowance, and various cultural experiences and side trips. Students holding an Eiffel Excellence Scholarship can choose to study Engineering, Economics,

11. Fulbright Foreign Student Program — Varies

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is a prestigious scholarship program aimed at students interested in pursuing a Master's (or PhD) degree abroad. The program provides funding for the entire duration of study or research, and funds tuition, textbooks, airfare, a living stipend, and health insurance. Eligibility varies widely from country to country, though successful applicants are usually from the top percentage of their undergraduate class. The application window stretches from February to October of each year.

12. Clarendon Scholarships at University of Oxford — Varies

One of only two scholarships on this list that is limited to one university, the Clarendon Scholarships encompass a number of financial awards that can be used for Master's programs at Oxford University in England. Each scholarship covers tuition and college fees in full, plus a generous grant for living expenses. Scholarships can be applied to any area of study, and international students who are accepted to an Oxford graduate program are automatically considered for a Clarendon Scholarship.

13. Gates Cambridge Scholarship — Varies

The second of two scholarships on this list that is limited to one university, the Gates Cambridge Scholarships are full-tuition awards for graduate study and research in any subject area at England's University of Cambridge. The scholarships cover the cost of tuition at Cambridge, university fees, maintenance allowance, airfare to and from England, and a monthly stipend. Prospective students should apply to both University of Cambridge and the Gates Scholarship program at the same time, using one application packet. The annual application deadline is October 15.

14. Vercille Voss Graduate Student Scholarship — $2,000

The Vercille Voss scholarship is aimed at graduate students who are pursuing a Master's degree in a field related to interior design. The application process for the $2,000 award includes a letter of recommendation, plus a short essay explaining future plans and goals, and why the award is deserved. Decisions are based upon the applicant's undergraduate academic achievement, awards received, accomplishments, goals, and the letter of recommendation. 15. Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship — Varies

The Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship is a monetary award ranging from $6,000 to $20,000 per year. The fellowship, aimed at graduate art students, will support a student in the United States or abroad. To be eligible, applicants must have a bachelor's degree in architecture, art, dance, landscape architecture, music, theater, or urban planning, and should be interested in a graduate program in the arts. 16. Frank Huntington Beebe Fund — $15,000

The Frank Huntington Beebe Fund offers an annual award of $15,000 to a gifted musician who wishes to pursue full-time advanced study and performance abroad. 17. Forte Fellows Program

With only 36.8% of MBAs being awarded to women in any given year, there are a number of scholarships, including the Forte Fellows Program, aimed only at women. To be eligible for the Forte Fellows Program, an applicant must be pursuing an MBA or EMBA at one of over 70 participating business schools, show exemplary leadership both inside and outside of the classroom, and demonstrate commitment to women and girls through mentoring or community development.

18. Richard A. Freund International Scholarship — $5,000

The Richard A. Freund International Scholarship is a one-time award for graduate study of the theory and application of quality control, quality assurance, quality improvement, total quality management, or applied math and sciences with an emphasis on quality. Successful applicants will have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.25. The scholarship can be used for costs of living and/or schooling in the recipient's home country or abroad. The annual application deadline is April 1.

19. Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship — Varies

The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship is an annual award sponsored by Zonta International. The scholarship is intended to help women succeed in business and is awarded to women pursuing a bachelor degree or master's degree in business management. Award amounts range from $1,000 to $5,000, and can be used for tuition, books, or living expenses. Any female business student is eligible, and interested applicants should reach out to their local Zonta club for nomination.

20. Aegis Alexander Graham Bell Scholarship — Varies

The Aegis Alexander Graham Bell Scholarship is awarded to students who are interested in pursuing a Masters or MBA in Telecom studies. The scholarship, which awards an amount of up to $8,750, will cover all or part of the recipient's tuition fees. Successful applicants will already possess an undergraduate degree in Communications.

Scholarships for Master's Degrees: Classics / Liberal Arts

21. Olivia James Traveling Fellowship — $25,000

The Olivia James Traveling Fellowship is a $25,000 fellowship offered to one graduate student, PhD candidate, or recent PhD recipient per year. The Fellowship may be used to study classics, sculpture, architecture, history, or archaeology in the Mediterranean area (Greece, the Aegean Islands, Cyprus, Sicily, Southern Italy, Asia Minor, or Mesopotamia). The Fellowship is merit based, and eligible students must be studying Historic Preservation and Conservation, Architecture, History, Humanities, Art History, Archaeology, Classics, or Near and Middle East Studies. 22. Helen M. Woodruff Fellowship — $10,000

Each year, $10,000 is awarded to one pre- or post-doctoral fellowship for study at the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) at the American Academy in Rome (AAR). The fellowship will support the student's tuition and living costs for a year of archaeology or classical studies. Following the fellowship tenure, the recipient is expected to report to the Chair of the AIA Fellowships Committee and the President of the AAR. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, and should submit their applications directly to the American Academy in Rome by November 1.

23. Anna C. and Oliver C. Colburn Fellowship — $11,000

This annual award of $11,000 is given to support a current graduate student's year of studies at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Greece. Recipients should be pursuing degrees in Archaeology, Classics, Historic Preservation and Conservation, History, Humanities, Architecture, or Art History. The successful applicant will be a permanent resident of the U.S. or Canada, enrolled in a North American university, and preference will be given to those students at the end of their Master's programs and in the pre-doctoral stage. Prospective fellows should submit their application and apply concurrently to the American School for Senior Associate Membership by January 15.

24. American School of Classical Studies at Athens Summer Sessions Scholarships — $5,000

Each year, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens offers multiple scholarships up to $5,000 for participation in the ASCSA Summer Sessions. Each six-week session occurs in Greece, and is designed to acquaint students with the country and its antiquities. Eligible students must be studying a subject within the Classics (including Anthropology, Arts, Museum Studies, Philosophy, Religion/Theology, Humanities, etc.), and should be studying part-time at a university or four-year college. The application deadline is January 15.

25. Pierre and Patricia Bikai Fellowship — Varies

The Pierre and Patricia Bikai Fellowship is awarded each year to a graduate student of any nationality who will reside at the American Center of Oriental Research in Amman, Jordan for a period of one or two months. The fellow must participate in an archaeological project in Jordan, and therefore should be a student of Archaeology, Historic Preservation and Conservation, History, or Architecture. The award includes room and board in Jordan, plus a monthly stipend of $600. The application deadline is February 1.

26. Harriet and Leon Pomerance Fellowship — $5,000

This $5,000 scholarship is annually awarded to a student actively pursuing an advanced degree in Archaeology, Historic Preservation and Conservation, History, Architecture, or Art History. The award, which is sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America, is designed to enable a student to work on an individual project of a scholarly nature related to Aegean Bronze Age Archaeology. Prospective fellows should apply by November 1.

27. International Fellowships in Jewish Studies — Varies

This fellowship program sponsored by the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture is designed to assist well-qualified individuals with an independent scholarly, literary, or art project in a field of Jewish specialization. Successful applicants must be graduate students with an interest in Jewish culture. The funded project should have the potential to make a significant contribution to the understanding, preservation, enhancement, or transmission of Jewish culture. 28. Rose and Isidore Drench Memorial Fellowships — $2,500

The Rose and Isidore Drench Memorial Fellowship is an award for graduate research in American Jewish history. This $5,000 scholarship, sponsored by the Lambda Alpha National Collegiate Honors Society for Anthropology, is given to encourage academically successful undergraduates to pursue graduate studies and work in Anthropology. Successful applicants will be part of a graduate program at a university, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, and will have completed a short statement of future plans. 36. Lou Hochberg Thesis and Dissertation Awards — $1,000

This one-time award of $1,000 is given as a prize to the best accepted essays addressing Wilhelm Reich's sociological discoveries. Submitted essays must have already been submitted as a departmental thesis, dissertation, or as an essay submission as part of the standard academic coursework. 38. Archaeology of Portugal Fellowship — Varies

As its name suggests, the Archaeology of Portugal Fellowship supports projects pertaining to the archaeology of Portugal. Such projects can include, but are not limited to, research projects, colloquia, symposia, publication, and travel for research or academic meetings. At the conclusion of the project, fellows must submit a report to the Chair of the Archaeological Institute of America Fellowships Committee. Prospective fellows should submit their applications by the annual November 1 deadline.

39. Frances C. Allen Fellowship for Women of American Indian Heritage

The Frances C. Allen Fellowship supports women of American Indian heritage with research in a field directly related to the collection at the Newberry Research Library in Chicago. Fellowships are from one month to one year, during which time fellows are expected to spend a significant amount of time in residence at the Newberry library. Though the fellowship includes an official stipend of $2,500 a month, supplemental funding may be available on a case-by-case basis. The annual application deadline is January 15.

40. American School of Classical Studies at Athens — Study in Greece

Each year, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens makes available a number of one-time awards for study in Greece. Preference is given to students of literature/English, anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, near and Middle East studies, classics, history, philosophy, religion, humanities, architecture, or art history, who have completed at least one year of graduate school. Award amounts vary, though all chosen students are awarded for the entire nine-month program in Athens. The annual application deadline is January 15.

41. Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies Visiting Scholar Programs

This program is focused on ensuring the development of a new generation of Holocaust scholars. The fellowships-in-residence are open to those working on their dissertation, post-doc researchers, and senior scholars. Scholars early in their career are encouraged to apply. The typical fellowship is 3-8 months and include a stipend.

42. The Reese Fellowship for American Bibliography and the History of the Book in the Americas — $3,000

Sponsored by The Bibliographical Society of America, the Reese Fellowship is an award to support any research work exploring the history of the book or print culture in the Western Hemisphere. Any academic, regardless of degree, is eligible, and applications should include a 1,000-word proposal, the applicant's C.V., and two letters of recommendation written on official letterhead. At the end of the fellowship, the fellow is expected to write a brief report for the William Reese Company which funds the fellowship. The annual application deadline is December 1.

43. The Charles J. Tanenbaum Fellowship in Cartographical Bibliography — $3,000

The Charles J. Tanenbaum Fellowship in Cartographical Bibliography, sponsored by The Bibliographical Society of America, is an award to support any projects dealing with aspects of the history, presentation, printing, design, distribution, and reception of cartographical documents from Renaissance times to the present. Any academic, regardless of degree, is eligible, and preference will be given to those whose projects emphasize 18th century cartography. 44. The BSA-Mercantile Library Fellowship in North American Bibliography — $3,000

This fellowship in North American Bibliography, co-sponsored by The Bibliographical Society of America and the Mercantile Library, is an award to support scholarship in North American bibliography, including studies in the North American book trade, production and distribution of North American books, illustration and design, collecting and connoisseurship, and bibliographical history in general. Any academic, regardless of degree, is eligible, and applications should include a 1,000-word proposal, the applicant's C.V., and two letters of recommendation written on official letterhead. 45. Joseph Kremen Memorial Fellowship — $6,500

The Joseph Kremen Memorial Fellowship is an award for graduate research in Eastern European Jewish music, art, and theater, and Yiddish literature. The Samuel and Flora Weiss Research Fellowship is an award to support graduate research in Polish-Jewish history in the modern period, especially Jewish-Polish relations, the Holocaust period, and Jewish contributions to Polish literature and culture. The fellowship is for a period of two to three months, during which time the recipient will receive a stipend of $4,000 to defray expenses. 47. The Nadia Christensen Prize for Translation — $2,500

This unique prize is awarded for outstanding translations of poetry, fiction, drama, or literary prose written in a Nordic language by a Scandinavian author born after 1800. Prospective applicants should submit their translation (which should be no longer than 50 pages), along with a copy of the original work and a C.V. In addition to the $2,500 prize, winners will receive publication of their translation in Scandinavian Review and a commemorative bronze medallion. The annual entry deadline is June 1.

48. The Leif and Inger Sjöberg Award — $2,000

The Leif and Inger Sjoberg Award is a unique prize awarded for outstanding translations of poetry, fiction, drama, or literary prose written in a Nordic language by a Scandinavian author born after 1800. Prospective applicants should submit their translation (which should be no longer than 50 pages), along with a copy of the original work and a C.V. In addition to the $2,000 prize, winners will receive publication of their translation in Scandinavian Review and a commemorative bronze medallion. 49. Shirley Holden Helberg Biennial Grant — $1,000

Sponsored by the National League of American Pen Women Inc., this $1,000 grant is awarded to women ages 35 and older who are active in the fields of art, music, or writing.
